North P&I Presents Best Cadet Award at Greece's Leading Marine Academy
North P&I Club has presented Christos Mathesis with its annual award for being the best officer cadet graduating from the National Merchant Marine Academy in Hydra today (4 December 2015). Founded in 1749, the academy is the oldest and most prestigious in Greece.
Presenting the award for the tenth successive year, North’s director Tony Allen congratulated Mathesis on his achievement in the face of strong competition. He added, ‘I would also like to commend principal Vassilis Stavropoulos and his colleagues for their hard work and commitment. They have again produced a group of cadets who are a credit to the academy and to the future of Greek shipping’.
Mathesis was nominated for North’s award by academy staff on the basis of his exam results as well as their views on his prospects for success. On completion of his studies, Mathesis recently joined Maran Tankers of Angelicousis, one of North’s Greek members. Other North Members which support the academy are Alpha Tankers, Avin, Minerva, Pantheon and Tsakos.
Each year North also runs a seminar at the academy on loss prevention and claims-related issues, a key part of which is a workshop of lessons learned from real-life incidents.
‘The focus of this year’s event was on collision avoidance and the human element, based on our recently published loss prevention guide Rocks and Hard Places – How to Avoid Them,’ says Allen. ‘As usual, the cadets enthusiastically and knowledgeably took part, and we wish them all every success in their future careers’.
The 175 million GT, ‘A’ rated North opened its office in Piraeus 15 years ago, where it now employs 12 staff. Greek owners and operators currently account for 22% of North’s entered tonnage.
