North P&I Club launches popular P&I and loss-prevention course in Asia-Pacific
The ‘A’ rated 150 million GT North P&I Club is launching an Asia-Pacific version of its highly popular one-week residential course in P&I insurance and loss prevention next month. The first course will take place at the Shangri La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort in Singapore on 16-21 October 2011.
According to the Club’s head of loss prevention Tony Baker, ‘We have been running a one-week residential course in P&I insurance and loss prevention in the UK for nearly 20 years now. It has been attended by hundreds of delegates from all over the world, many of whom have since moved on to senior positions in the shipping industry.
‘In that time North has grown to one of the largest P&I Clubs in the world and nearly a quarter of our tonnage now comes from the Asia-Pacific region. We have therefore decided to hold an Asia-Pacific version of the course based in Singapore. It is primarily tailored to the needs of our members’ seagoing and shore-based staff in the region but is also open to other representatives of the Asia-Pacific maritime community.’
The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to P&I liabilities in respect of ships, people and cargo as well as claims management and the all-important aspects of loss prevention. Formal training sessions by experts from North’s offices around the world are complemented by a series of topical workshops, a port visit and a practical exercise on a bridge simulator. Topics covered during the week will include collisions, pollution, damage to property, personal injuries and illness, stowaways and persons in distress, contracts of carriage, charterparties, risk management and current issues such as piracy and sanctions.
The cost to non-members, including five nights accommodation at the hotel, is S$4800. North members will receive a 20% discount. Further details of the course are available here or by contacting Elizabeth Er at the Club’s Singapore office on +65 6411 0160, email elizabeth.er@nepia.com.
North currently provides P&I cover to 115 million GT owned tonnage and around 35 million GT of chartered tonnage, with some 4270 ships entered by 375 members. The Club is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK with regional offices in Hong Kong, Piraeus and Singapore. It is a member of the International Group of P&I Clubs.
