Nickel Ore Cargoes - *Update*
The recent tragic loss of the handysize bulk carrier Emerald Star has again brought nickel ore cargoes into the spotlight.
While it is too early to determine whether the Indonesian nickel ore the vessel was carrying was causative to the loss, we have recently been made aware of a number of liquefaction incidents with nickel ore cargoes. It is therefore vital that crews remain vigilant when loading cargoes of nickel ore.
The crew must be guided by the requirements of the IMSBC code, we also recommend that crews familiarise themselves with the advice contained within our loss prevention publications. The following publications provide advice on the carriage of nickel ore:
