Canada: Ships Operating in Ice-covered Waters
Members are reminded of Transport Canada’s mandatory winter navigation notice requirements and the Canadian Regulations Concerning Ships Operating in Ice-covered Waters. The guidelines contain a marine safety checklist and outline the measures to be taken by ships operating in Canada’s territorial waters.
Local P&I correspondents in Canada can provide Members with a list of approved Ice Advisors. These advisors have specialist local knowledge and provide both navigational and operational assistance to ships operating in their area during the winter months.
Members should obtain up to date information on Ice Bulletins, Ice Warnings and a 30 day Ice Outlook (December to May) from the Environment Canada website and this can be accessed by clicking here.
Information for ships transiting the St Lawrence Seaway can be found on theGreat Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway website.
