BIMCO has published its COVID-19 Crew Change Clause for Time Charter Parties 2020 in response to the extraordinary circumstances faced by many shipowners, whose crew’s service has extended beyond their contracts of employment.

Travel and movement restrictions are in place in many countries and these are impacting crew changes. The new BIMCO clause is designed to give owners the liberty to deviate for crew changes under tightly defined circumstances. It also provides an option for time charterers to contribute to the crew change in recognition of the potentially high costs involved.

The clause is available to download from the BIMCO website along with explanatory notes providing a guide to its use and application.

BIMCO’s explanatory notes rightly observe that on each and every occasion owners intend to deviate they must inform their P&I club to ascertain that the deviation will not prejudice their P&I cover.
