Mandatory Application of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (IMSBC Code)
CIRCULAR REF: 2010/037
CIRCULATED TO ALL MEMBERS, BROKERS AND DIRECTORS
Members are reminded that the IMSBC Code is mandatory under the provisions of the SOLAS Convention from 1 January 2011.
Replacing the Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes (BC Code), its purpose is to facilitate the safe stowage and shipment of solid bulk cargoes. The Code provides information on the dangers associated with the shipment of certain types of solid bulk cargo and on the procedures to be adopted when shipment is contemplated.
The Code also describes statutory obligations placed on parties involved in the shipment of bulk cargo, irrespective of whether it has been classified as hazardous or not. For cargo not listed in Appendix 1, these obligations include certification by the load port authority of cargo characteristics and any required conditions for loading and handling.
As with all IMDG and hazardous bulk cargoes – the requirements for Club cover are that the cargoes must be carried in strict accordance with statutory requirements, including the IMDG Code, IMSBC Code, IGC Code and the IBC Code.
For further information on the IMSBC Code please contact the Loss Prevention Department.
