Loss in the Faroes Could be Due to Polluting Fertiliser
An unknown incident affected one of Bakkafrost’s fish farms resulting in the loss of 750,000 half kilo fish. At the time of the loss some fertiliser was being spread on a near-by field and there were some algae seen in the water at the time.
We have not heard of any previous algal bloom issues in the Faroes. Perhaps the root cause would be the potential pollutants in the slurry causing direct mortality or an acute oxygen crash due to the increased biological oxygen demand (BOD) on the water. We will review any further information as it is made available.
