Issues to Consider in Planned Vessel-Based Aquaculture Farms
Although keeping fish alive whilst in a ship is nothing new – wellboats transfer salmon from farm to farm on a regular basis – feeding the fish and dealing with the waste is something to overcome.
All fish transferred using wellboats are starved prior to moving so that there is no waste produced. This improves the water quality and reduces the risk to the transfer. Transferring land-based RAS technology to deal with fish waste onto a vessel will be a complex and vital process in the commissioning of this project.
Another issue to overcome will be the stability of the vessel. The holds in a cargo ship far exceed anything seen in a wellboat and the movement of the water within the holds could cause issues in bad weather.
