Heightened Threat of Kidnap in Gulf of Guinea

Maritime security intelligence experts Ambrey warns of a heightened risk of crew kidnap in the Gulf of Guinea.

Ambrey has intelligence of possibly two active criminal syndicates operating in the Bight of Benin and southwest/south of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The criminals’ modus operandi is to kidnap crew for ransom. In the last twelve months, the region has seen 83 crew members from merchant vessels and commercial fishing vessels kidnapped.

Within the same period, criminals have attacked vessels of all types inside the Beninese, Ghanaian, Nigerian and Togolese EEZs, the Nigerian-Sao Tome and Principe Joint Development Zone, international waters 210nm offshore Nigeria, Lomé anchorage and Cotonou anchorage.

In their threat warning issued on 4 November 2020, Ambrey also advise of three attacks on vessels since 17 October 2020.

Ambrey has provided some lessons learned and recommendations, drawing attention to the importance of voyage risk assessments when considering operating in such regions. The report also includes country-specific advice.
