Pre-employment medical examinations (PEME) are an effective means to ensure that your crew are fit for employment at sea and reduce the risk of crew illness claims.

As well as causing disruption to shipowners’ operations, crew illnesses continue to lead to costly claims. Many of these claims could have been avoided if the seafarer had a comprehensive medical examination by a reliable medical facility or clinic, prior to employment.

North has been successfully running two enhanced PEME programmes for many years, one in the Philippines and one in the Ukraine. Our enhanced PEME not only assists with ensuring fit and healthy crew, it also serves to provide advices on maintaining health and fitness at sea. We also provide advice on effective pre-employment medical screening and the selection of suitable clinics in other crew supply areas worldwide.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a large number of seafarers having their contracts extended, some by several months. This has further highlighted the importance of an enhanced PEME.
