North P&I Club’s Singapore Training Course Fully Subscribed
North P&I Club’s residential training course in P&I insurance and loss prevention started today (16 November) in Singapore. Launched in 2011, the 175 million GT, ‘A’ rated Club’s biennial one-week course has proven to be very popular and is again fully subscribed.
Training grants from the Maritime Cluster Fund of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singpore (MPA) were made available to eligible participants (see www.mpa.gov.sg/mcf).
According to Andrew Kirkham, loss prevention executive at North’s Singapore office, ‘In addition to 11 delegates from Singapore we have shipping industry professionals attending from throughout the Asia Pacific region, including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and Malaysia. We also have handful from even further afield, including Canada, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UK and the USA.’
The course, which is being held at the Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort in Singapore, is an Asia Pacific version of a similar residential course North has been running in the UK for over 20 years. This has been attended by hundreds of delegates from all over the world, many of whom have since risen to senior positions in the shipping industry.
Kirkham says, ‘The course is designed to give representatives from shipowners, law firms, correspondents, survey companies and other P&I clubs a comprehensive introduction to P&I liabilities in respect of ships, people and cargo as well as claims management and the all-important aspects of loss prevention.’
Formal training sessions by experts from North’s Singapore office are complemented by a series of topical workshops including a practical collision workshop at the MPA’s ship simulator centre. The course leaders are Kirkham and North’s Singapore director, James Moran.
North’s Singapore office opened in 2007 and now has 15 staff including five P&I claims specialists, five freight, demurrage and defence (FD&D) solicitors and two loss prevention executives. Together with the Hong Kong and Tokyo offices, they serve the needs of the Club’s steadily growing Asia Pacific membership, which now accounts for 35% of entered tonnage.
