New App for European Health Insurance Card
North has previously advised members on the advantages of ensuring that eligible seafarers carry an EHIC card when on board their vessels. A recent case his highlighted their usefulness but also the need to ensure seafarers apply for an EHIC card.
A Belgian crew member was recently admitted to a state hospital in Germany. At the time of admission, the seafarer was not in possession of a valid EHIC card. However, with the assistance of the local manning agents, a card was quickly applied for and obtained. No charges were subsequently made by the treating hospital saving Owners and the Club the cost of treatment. However, the hospital was under no obligation to accept the EHIC card – as the seafarer had not obtained it prior to using the hospital’s services.
It is easier than ever for seafarers to apply for their EHIC cards with the assistance of the EHIC app. The EHIC App provides lots of information including full details of the contact points in each EU Member state where a crew member (or his family on his behalf) may apply online for an EHIC card in order to access free medical treatment in Member states. It is recommended that EU crew obtain their EHIC cards prior to joining the vessel as the rules of the scheme provide free treatment only where the card is presented on admission to a state hospital.
The European Commission has now developed a new app that can be accessed via their website at
