Spoofing Email - October 2019

Add
PDF

It has come to our attention that a spoofing (non-genuine) email portraying to be sent from North was circulated yesterday, 24 October 2019, to a number of correspondents worldwide.

The scam email purports to be from a North P&I Club employee with the subject heading ‘UK (Newcastle) Office’ and requested correspondents to provide details of any outstanding payments and/or invoices owed. The email is being falsely issued from the following domain: firstname.lastname@execs.com, which appears once you have clicked reply to the email. The spoof email contains the following text:

Greetings,

Can you confirm to me the status of your outstanding payments if there are any. Please get back to us at the earliest with total amount outstanding with corresponding due dates and copy of invoices preferably.

Your immediate response will be highly appreciated.

This email is NOT genuine and did NOT originate from North. We have been made aware that similar emails may have also been sent out portraying to be from other clubs too.

There has been no data security breach at North P&I but anyone receiving unsolicited emails of this nature from the Club should treat them with caution, double check the sender details and telephone numbers. If there is any doubt as to the authenticity of an email, forward it to your own IT support function before opening any attachments or links. Any emails received from the firsname.lastname@execs.com domain should be immediately deleted and disregarded.

The Club is urging all correspondents to be vigilant of cybercrimes and scams of this type where criminals pretend to be legitimate suppliers in order to obtain sensitive personal and business information. North has previously advised on this common scam and the simple steps that they can take to protect their interests. The guidance can be read here along with our latest updates on this ever-evolving threat.

For further information on this scam email, please get in touch with your normal Club contact.
