US: State-Run Fish Farm Loses 6.2m Fry After Power Cut
Following a power cut and failure of the back-up generator, 6.2 million fry in incubators were lost.
Other methods to save the fry were unsuccessful. Minter Creek releases around 100 million fish each year and accounts for about three quarters of the commercial and recreational fish caught in Puget Sound. The site uses river and well water to supply the site.
Sunderland Marine recommends that all generators are tested on load on a weekly basis along with regular servicing to ensure that the system will provide appropriate back-up to the site. Many sites have diesel motors as back-ups to electrical pumps if the water cannot be fed to the site by gravity in event of a catastrophic failure.
