Loss Prevention Fan Dance

Three members of our loss prevention department, Simon Macleod, John Southam and Stephen Maclennan took part in the fan dance endurance event on the 5th January in aid of the Huntington’s Disease Association charity.

The Fan Dance is a gruelling 24km (15 mile) SAS Selection test march staged over Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons. The guys took part in the load bearing race and completed the course wearing up to 50 lbs (22kilos) Bergen’s on their backs for the entire event. The infamous march is the world’s oldest Special Forces test and Pen y fan has an elevation of 886m. To complete the course the guys had to scale Pen y Fan twice starting the race with an immediate lung busting 3 mile climb to the top. The weather at the summit on the day was minus 8 which made the decent down the infamous “Jacobs Ladder” difficult due to ice and strong winds!

From here the race heads out to the half way point were participants are forced by former SAS directing staff to run in order to make the best time they can. From half way the participants start climbing up the 6KM roman road accent, and then come face to face after 18km with heading back up Jacobs Ladder to the summit again. From here the race takes you back down to the start line, which sounds easy but with aching legs its quite a challenge!
