South America – Soya Bean Harvest

Add
PDF

With the 2021 soya bean season now in full swing in South America, the carriage of this cargo from South America to China may lead to claims due to the natural properties of the beans.

The damage usually stems from the cargo’s tendency to self-heat. Soya beans loaded in Brazil often have high moisture content and load temperature. This means it is likely that mould may form during the voyage through no fault of the vessel. As such, we would like to remind our Members of the potential risks of this trade and our suite of loss prevention material.

The annual soya bean harvest is underway. The carriage of soya bean cargoes from South America to China may lead to claims due to the natural properties of the beans.

In recent years, North has handled a number of soya bean claims for cargoes carried from Brazil to China. The most problematic cargoes tend to be associated with the first harvest of the year, which for 2018 starts imminently.

The damage usually stems from the cargo’s tendency to self-heat. Soya beans loaded in Brazil often have high moisture content and load temperature. This means it is likely that mould may form during the voyage through no fault of the vessel.

North has produced a loss prevention briefing on the carriage of soya bean cargoes which can be read HERE.
