Guidelines for the Carriage of Divinylbenzene in Containers
Containers loaded with Divinylbenzene (DVB) are at risk of explosions and fires. Therefore, joint industry guidelines for carrying DVB in containers have been published by CINS (the Cargo Incident Notification System), the International Group of P&I Clubs and the TT Club.
DVB is a liquid chemical which is prone to polymerization (a form of self-reaction). In some cases when DVB is shipped in bulk it can generate a large amount of heat and flammable gases. If exposed to an ignition source within a certain amount of oxygen the DVB gas may explode.
DVB shall be carried in accordance with the requirements set out in the in the IMDG code. In advance of the mandatory application of the Code amendment 39-18 on the 1 January 2020, it is strongly recommended the additional precautions set out in the joint industry guidelines are followed.
The guidelines, which are valid until 1 January 2020, can be read here: Guidelines for the Carriage of DVB.
