Norway Bans Tarpaulin Treatments Near Shrimp
Tarpaulins are used to fully enclose marine aquaculture pens for treatments against ectoparasites and Amoebic Gill Disease (AGD).
They prevent water exchange during the treatment so that the concentration of therapeutant remains constant throughout. Following the ban, the sites will now have to use a wellboat to treat the fish and the water used must be transported away from the farm for treatment and disposal.
This ban will increase the demand on wellboats in Norway and may increase production costs. There may also be a faster uptake of non-chemical treatments for sea lice and AGD as a result. The results from this study could also be used in other territories where the same therapeutants are used.
