Far East members of the 'A' rated, 100 million GT North of England P&I club bid farewell this week to managing director Rodney Eccleston during receptions in Hong Kong and Singapore on 8 and 10 September 2009 respectively. They were Eccleston's last official international events before he hands over to deputies Paul Jennings and Alan Wilson when he retires on 18 September.
Over 200 members, brokers, lawyers and their guests attended the two events, along with government representatives and local officials including Hong Kong Marine Department director Roger Tupper and Phil Hickson of the British High Commission in Singapore.
Bosco Louie, director of corporate logistics and fleet management of Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), presented a gift to Eccleston on behalf of members attending the Hong Kong reception, while Robert Sumantri, group chief executive officer of Altus Group and a director of North, made a similar presentation on behalf of members in Singapore.
Eccleston said, ‘It has been a great privilege working with our ever-increasing Far East membership. When I first joined North 36 years ago, our total fleet was less than 2 million GT. However, with the help and support of our Far East members - many of whom have gone on to become directors - we have now grown to 100 million GT and rank among the top clubs in the world. This is a testimony to the strength and support of our Far East membership, which continues to grow.'
Far East owned and managed ships account for over 20 million GT of North's total entered tonnage. They are primarily serviced by the club's Hong Kong office managed by Alan Lo and the Singapore office run by Iain Beange.
