By the time of the First World War, North had become the leading P&I Club.

The international shipping depression between the wars and the decline of the UK shipping industry after the Second World War resulted in a fall in the Club's membership and of its relative position in the P&I world.

The Club's fortunes revived with the appointment, in 1962, of the first managers from outside of the Club and with the decision, in the late 1960's, to start accepting as members ship-owners from outside of the UK.

The merger with the Newcastle P&I Club in 1998 and the absorption of business from the Liverpool & London Club in 2000 gave new impetus to the Club's development. Today it is the fourth largest P&I Club in the world, covering a tenth of the global merchant fleet.
