Who We Are

Gary HendersonGary Henderson
Underwriter (Operations)  |  9 years

What do you enjoy most about working for the Club?

I worked for four companies prior to joining North and the moment I joined I sensed it was different to all the others. It didn’t feel like I was an employee of North, but part of a team that looked after their employees. I can see why the staff turnaround is low and generally why most people have worked here for a long period of time.

On top of all this, we work in a fantastic office, in a great location with a great bunch of people!

Describe your day to day role

My daily role generally involves interaction with Members and Brokers on different aspects of their cover, whilst also evaluating and providing quotes for new vessels.

I’m also involved with a number of projects within the company i.e. our new IT system and an operational effectiveness project.

What opportunities have you been given for training and personal growth?

I joined the company in 2007 as an Underwriting Executive. I now work as an underwriter with additional responsibility for operations within the Underwriting department. The company assisted me in preparing for these roles by arranging in-house training and external courses such as the IG Qualification and the ACII.

Each year we receive performance reviews, during which we discuss achievements throughout the year and also set goals/targets for the new year.

What do you enjoy most about working for the Club?

I really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the nice people I work with and the variety of work – all sorts of things cross my desk and I rarely know exactly what I am going to be doing each day.

I have found that the company is a good size in terms of exposure to different areas of the business; our group structure is relatively complex which helps with increasing technical knowledge but the company’s relatively small size makes it easy to talk to people across all disciplines and at all levels.

Describe your day to day role

My day to day role might involve one or a number of the following areas, although it tends to vary day to day:-

  • Providing advice on regulatory/legal requirements to colleagues in other departments in relation to all jurisdictions (but primarily in relation to our UK, New Zealand and Australia operations)
  • Assisting with company secretarial processes when required
  • Assisting legal counsel with drafting or reviewing corporate contracts, such as inwards reinsurance agreements, service agreements, outsourcing agreements, binders or leases
  • Dealing with licensing queries
  • Keeping up to date with applicable legal and regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions where we do business, and training/advising colleagues of any relevant developments
  • Ensuring that group processes meet applicable legal and regulatory requirements
  • Overseeing the project management of specific projects (recently these have included things like developing a group sanctions checking procedure and specific projects relating to the merger of Sunderland Marine and North)

What opportunities have you been given for training and personal growth?

For the first year after I joined the company I assisted with minute taking and papers for the audit and finance committees. This was a useful insight into financial, audit and board related processes.

I have been given the opportunities to shadow colleagues where relevant to learn more about their roles and group strategy.

Claims Executive – P&I  |  6 years

What do you enjoy most about working for the Club?

The social aspect of the company is second to none, with a variety of events taking place throughout the year. The success of these events is undoubtedly down to the friendly and approachable staff who work for North and enhances what is already a fantastic working environment.

Describe your day to day role

Day to day I deal with the North's people claims, this is both interesting and challenging as you encounter a wide variety of different claims from illness and injuries of crew members to the rescue of persons in distress.

What opportunities have you been given for training and personal growth?

Personally I have been provided with excellent opportunities to grow within the company, progressing my career significantly since joining the company.

More recently I have undertaken work experience in a local law firm in order to build on the legal knowledge and expertise required when handling claims.
