Legal Assistant

We have an opportunity to join the Legal Support team as a Legal Assistant at our Newcastle office. In this exciting role you’ll be responsible for assisting our lawyers/claims handlers with a broad variety of primarily FD&D work including running London arbitrations and advising on all aspects of world and industry events. This is an interesting, varied and challenging role and a great opportunity to work within the shipping industry in a friendly and supportive environment.
Your main duties will include:
- Assisting in the administration and conduct of claims with appropriate guidance and support from those requiring assistance.
- Provide discrete task assistance (legal, procedural and administrative) across a high number of claims primarily involving FD&D matters including, but not limited to, updating
- Claim Status summaries and reports, assisting with costs management and recovery, complex legal minutes, completing standard legal procedures and tasks on files, assisting in the conduct of London arbitration proceedings and as appropriate instructing external lawyers, surveyors, correspondents or experts both in the UK and abroad.
- Assisting with discrete research tasks, legal and claims related data collection, analysis and management systems.
- Assist in drafting documents as may be appropriate and required.
- Assist in drafting reports for internal reporting purposes.
- Add additional capacity and support to the FD&D lawyers and other colleagues within NorthStandard generally, as required and agreed by your line manager.
Ideally, you’ll have:
Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience
- A Law Degree and/or a recognised Legal Qualification (i.e. CILEx (Civil Litigation & Contract as the law subject), LPC, BVC, PPA etc.)
- Legal knowledge and experience.
- IT Literate with the ability to quickly adapt to new systems. Working knowledge of MS office and Worksite.
- Efficient & effective administration skills, demonstrating an attention to detail concerning work produced.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications/Experience
- Some knowledge of shipping law and/or the shipping industry
- Work experience in a paralegal role or equivalent
